Friday Sounds

the late afternoon air is
filled with Friday sounds
that don’t seem as loud

as other days

there is an endless stream
of car horns truck horns
school buses rushing by

the bulk garbage trucks
that normally come on
Mondays whipped through

the neighborhood in twos
there was nothing to
pickup

I was wrong

as they were filled with
fallen trees that must
have blocked a street

nearby

train horns chime in as
long lumbering trains
cross town holding up

rush hour traffic as
they go

it seems many of the
people are impatient
possibly eager to die

no masks
no vaccinations
they rather believe

the lie

who is willing to hear

the late afternoon air is
filled with Friday sounds

Not Far Behind

It got dark at midday when
the first thunderstorm hit
and bright sun followed.

But not for long as the
fourth thunderstorm of the
day just passed over.

It is the start of hurricane
season so it is easy to
think of doom and gloom.

Will our new fence hold
this time?

Talking faith on a sunny
day is one thing but on a
day like today you hold

your breath and pray the
Lord will bring us, our
house, and fence through,

not to mention the swaying
trees and swinging power
lines. God is our provider

and refuge as the weather
becomes a true test of faith
with hope not far behind.

Just This Once

when life throws
you a curve ball
when you least

expect it

that is when the
coach puts you
in to bat

he spits then
looks you
straight in

the eye
just get on base
son I’ll do the

rest

you nod and in
your mind you
are on deck

fighting for
your life in a
game you’ve

never won

still you want
to belt it out
over the fence

or out of the
park just this
once

Fresh Hope

as I sat outside

a gentle breeze
washed over me
reminding me of

God’s peace that
is with us during
our trials on this

another difficult
day but God is
with us in our

pain and sickness
even if it seems
to never let up

faith is our relief
reminding us that
He will never leave

us nor forsake us

another light breeze
of fresh hope swirled
past me as I sat on

the patio in the late
afternoon
